My Approach

Working with you

For different reasons, many individuals find it daunting to seek help and psychological support. Through online counselling, I am able to support clients regardless of where they are, with sessions arranged at a weekly time that fits their life. The issues we could work on can range from general mood related issues to psychosexual oriented topics, some of which are listed under Focus areas and themes below.

As an empathic listener, I support clients to unpack current or upcoming challenges and see the potential that exists beyond the immediate worry. With my help, clients are able to process difficult or painful thoughts and feelings more effectively. I understand the pressures of modern living – struggling with the pace of change, or conversely feeling ‘stuck’ in a situation, and challenges relating to expectations of both ‘fitting-in’ and ‘standing-out’. I work with clients to identify and draw on inner resources, to empower them with tools to take action to live a more content life, moving beyond limiting beliefs or the presence of anxiety.

Psychotherapeutic Approach

I am qualified in Psychosynthesis counselling and am currently training in the specialist field of sex and relationship therapy. I draw on several ways of working according to your need, tailoring my approach individually. Sometimes people can find themselves in positions they are unequipped to deal with effectively and put pressure on themselves in varying ways, leading to unhelpful or damaging coping strategies, which are as unique as each person’s story. My approach is client-centred and I will work with you at your own pace, with respect and unconditional positive regard. Together we will identify healthier ways of managing emotions, anxiety and responding to situations, exploring them as an opportunity for personal growth. I specialise in helping clients cope with a range of circumstances, including related to sex and relationship issues.

I practice online and you will need to have somewhere quiet and private for our sessions. Quality of counselling offered is of utmost importance to me and I abide by the BACP Code of Ethics and Professional Practice and COSRT Code of Ethics and Practice. I have personally experienced my life change from psychotherapy and believe yours will too.

FAQs

How do I start consultation with you?

I offer a free no-obligations 25 minute introductory online consultation for prospective clients to decide whether you would like to proceed with therapy. During this consultation we can discuss what brings you to counselling, how we may work together and answer any questions you may have – please fill in the form with your query or schedule an appointment via the booking page. You do not need to decide whether to proceed with therapy during the introductory consultation and can notify me via email after our chat if that is more comfortable.

If you would like to proceed, I will send you a pre-therapy assessment to check that I am the right therapist to support you at this time. After assessment indicating that we can work together, I will then email you pre-therapy documents, which includes our agreement for you to fill and return. While this sounds like a lot, these stages are all important to make sure that your therapy with me is appropriate and safe. I have also found this maximises use of our time, so we can focus on talking about the presenting issues during our sessions.

Once I have received your signed documents, you can schedule a weekly time slot so we can start our work together.

How long will I need therapy?

If we decide to work together, you will commit to a minimum of six sessions as an ongoing weekly appointment. We will review before the sixth session whether you have a need to continue. The overall length of counselling is open-ended and varies for each individual. It could be contained within the six sessions at a minimum or span several years, depending on client-centred needs.

Why do you offer only online counselling? Isn’t in-person counselling better?

There are advantages and disadvantages of both approaches. I have offered in-person therapy in the past and continue to do so on a limited basis as an Honorary Counsellor at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Currently, I like the flexibility and possibility of reaching a much wider audience online. Through online counselling, I am able to support clients regardless of where they are, with sessions arranged at a weekly time that fits their life. From a client perspective, working online with someone professionally registered and proficient could be preferable than in person from a limited pool of therapists available locally.

How do you ensure I receive good quality counselling?

Quality of counselling offered is of utmost importance to me and I abide by the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice of both BACP and COSRT. Regular clinical supervision is carried out to ensure standards, enhance quality, advance learning, stimulate creativity, and support the sustainability and resilience of the work being undertaken. Related to my sex and relationship therapy practitioner training leading to COSRT registration, supervision is with a COSRT Registered Supervisor. During supervision, I may talk about our work together but no personal identifying information will be shared.

I take part in regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) exceeding the BACP’s mandatory annual membership requirements to ensure I have the capacity to practise safely, effectively and legally within the evolving scope of practice.

Can I cancel a session?

Yes, you can cancel your session with a week’s notice or more. If you cancel with less than a week you will be charged full session rate, unless in exceptional circumstances such as a medical emergency. However, repetitive patterns of cancellation (regardless of payment for the sessions) are a hindrance to your progression and we will have to discuss how to continue if that becomes a factor.

What if I feel a resistance to therapy?

The relationship between the therapist and the client is crucial for the therapeutic process. Sometimes a client may experience challenging emotions during therapy and may feel misunderstood or uncomfortable discussing further. If this happens, it would be beneficial for you to share those feelings with me, so we have an opportunity to work through them without judgement. The feelings you experience within the therapeutic relationship can sometimes reflect challenges in life outside the counselling space - talking them through safely can be rewarding, deepening our mutual understanding and leading to personal growth.

How will I access online counselling?

I practice online, usually via Skype (unless you have a preference for a different platform) and you will need to have somewhere quiet and private for the session. Psychotherapy cannot take place in an open or outdoor setting such as a park or on public transport, or with another person in the room. Please note that for Health and Safety reasons, children are not permitted to be in the room for your session and children aged 9 or under must not be left unsupervised during your session. If applicable, childcare arrangements will need to be made for at least the duration of the session.

At the time of each scheduled session, I will call you via Skype, or the agreed method. Be prepared before the start of our session and answer to commence therapy.

Are the sessions recorded?

No. Due to confidentiality, recording of sessions by clients is prohibited as well. As all sessions are confidential, whatever we discuss remains between us. During supervision, which is carried out to ensure standards and enhance quality, I may talk about our work together but no personal identifying information will be shared.

Please check my Privacy Policy to see how I protect and manage your data.

What if we experience connection problems?

Please note that there might be some interruptions due to technology, which I will do my best to avoid but maybe inevitable due to issues such as connection problems. If this becomes a significant factor, we can discuss whether to reschedule the session at your convenience. If technological problems prevent us from connecting online, I will email (failing which I will call you on your mobile number) as soon as possible to arrange a solution.
